Adopting the Tool Without Outsourcing Judgment
deusdata/codebase-memory-mcp is easiest to misuse when its graph-first workflow is treated as a replacement for judgment. This chapter turns the project's integration and security design into a practical adoption standard: choose an appropriate evidence depth, use the graph to narrow the question, retrieve exact source, check coverage and workspace boundaries, and measure quality separately from speed or token savings. It also addresses a material documentation conflict about runtime network behavior, because trust depends on stating uncertainty rather than choosing the most reassuring sentence.
The goal is not to turn codebase-memory-mcp into a universal operating rule for every agent. Its value depends on how the host client uses the graph, what scope the user permits, which source constructs the index represents, and what claim the final answer makes. Installation connects the executable to an agent; it does not transfer responsibility for interpretation from the agent or user to the index.
Use the graph as a workflow, not a verdict
A responsible first request establishes context. The agent should identify the intended project, check whether an index exists, and inspect its readiness and coverage state before asking a narrow structural question. An architecture or schema view can show whether the project contains the kinds of nodes and relationships the question assumes. If the graph is absent, empty, stale, or tied to an unexpected root, a later zero-result query should not be interpreted as a source conclusion.
From there, the graph-first path is progressive but not mechanical. search_graph finds candidate symbols using structural filters, full-text ranking, or other supported modes. trace_path follows callers, callees, data flow, or service relationships. get_code_snippet retrieves the exact definition needed to explain behavior. query_graph handles multi-hop or aggregation questions, while search_code remains the right tool for literal text, non-code material, or flagged source ranges. check_index_coverage tests the paths or scopes that carry the claim.
The sequence changes with the question. A known function may go directly to an exact snippet. A literal error message may be easier to find in source text. A system-boundary question may begin with architecture and route evidence. The principle is not “always make the same calls.” It is “use the graph for identity and relationships, source for exact behavior, and coverage metadata for the boundary around what the graph can support.”
The installer extends this workflow into the host agent. The repository claims automatic or conditional support for many client surfaces and embeds a shared set of instructions: orient with project/index state, use graph tools first, paginate, retrieve exact source for material claims, check cited-path coverage, and fall back to text search when coverage is incomplete. Those instructions matter because an MCP server that is never selected by the agent's reasoning loop becomes an unused database, while a server used without its caveats becomes a source of overconfident answers.
Where a client supports custom agent definitions, codebase-memory-mcp distinguishes three evidence tiers. Scout is for fast positive discovery with narrow calls and provisional findings. It should not make absence, exhaustive-impact, or dead-code claims. Verify is the default task-directed mode: it follows the relevant graph relationships, checks exact source for material facts, and covers the result pages that matter.
