When the Search Page Starts Doing the Conversation

The Google–Reddit evidence suggests that static AI summaries can increase participation when a community offers value that the summary cannot reproduce. The next question is whether that discovery effect survives when the search page becomes more interactive. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode provide a useful comparison: one presents a relatively fixed summary with citations, while the other lets a user ask follow-up questions inside the search experience. The change matters because interface capability determines how much of the user’s remaining task stays outside the search page.

Two interfaces, two residual tasks

An AI Overview changes the first encounter with a source. It summarizes information in the results page and points to sources through citations. A user can read the summary, decide that the cited community is relevant, and then cross into Reddit to inspect the discussion. The summary may answer part of the question, but the source still has an opportunity to supply context, disagreement, personal experience, and peer response.

AI Mode changes the location of the follow-up. Instead of requiring the user to leave the results page when the first answer is incomplete, it provides a conversational interface in which the user can ask additional questions. This does not mean the system reproduces every quality of a community discussion. It does mean that more of the information-seeking sequence can occur before a source visit becomes necessary.

That distinction can be described as a change in residual task. Under a static summary, the user may still need the source to answer questions such as: How do people with different circumstances interpret this? What happened in a real case? Which recommendation survives disagreement? Under a conversational interface, the user can ask the search system to elaborate, compare, or narrow its answer. The interface may therefore absorb some of the depth that previously created a reason to visit.

The important variable is not whether the interface is more impressive. It is which activity has moved across the boundary between search and source. A source platform can benefit from a summary that lowers the cost of discovery while still depending on the source for interaction. If follow-up explanation also moves into search, the source may receive the initial visibility without receiving the same depth of participation.

The comparison should not be read as a contest between two product labels. A static interface can sometimes answer a follow-up well, and a conversational interface can still direct a user to a community. The analytical point is that follow-up capacity changes the set of tasks the search page can attempt. If the source’s distinctive value lies in a task the interface cannot perform, discovery may remain complementary. If the interface increasingly performs that task, substitution pressure can grow.

This is why the earlier search-good/experience-good distinction is necessary but not sufficient. Content type describes what value remains after summarization.
