Overview

OOH audience measurement is not a direct conversion from passing traffic to people who saw an ad. This series separates location traffic and circulation from Gross Impressions, OTS/Viewable Impressions, LTS, and Audience, then traces the conditions behind each step: exposure-zone geometry, dwell and movement, display functionality, ad delivery and proof of play, anonymous video analytics, tracking, bias, validation, privacy, and deduplication. It helps buyers and sellers match a metric to its evidence and stop at the strongest defensible claim. The evidence does not prove attention, conversion, or universal performance across deployments.

Learning outcomes
  • Traffic and circulation describe presence near a site; they do not by themselves establish OOH impressions or Audience.
  • Each stronger label adds conditions for the exposure zone, display state, viewability, ad delivery, notice, consumption, or uniqueness.
  • Anonymous video analytics can strengthen person counting, but its benchmark results and OTS rules remain study- and deployment-specific.
  • A defensible report discloses models, gaps, bias, privacy, validation, and stops at the highest label its evidence supports.

FAQ

Why isn't passing traffic the same as a billboard audience impression?

Passing traffic records movement through a defined place, not necessarily people in the Display Exposure Zone while a functioning, viewable billboard showed the relevant ad. Stronger audience labels also require evidence about notice, consumption, or unique reporting.

What do Gross, OTS, LTS, and Audience Impressions mean in OOH measurement?

They are progressively qualified measures: Gross links Presence in a Display Exposure Zone to a functioning display; OTS adds viewability, LTS adds evidence-based likelihood of notice or seeing, and Audience adds further consumption and qualification requirements.

How can anonymous video analytics support billboard measurement?

Anonymous video analytics can observe and aggregate person locations, tracks, and study-defined OTS counts at the edge without recording or streaming raw video. It does not by itself prove which ad played, notice, Audience, conversion, or unique people across displays.

What should a buyer verify before accepting a billboard audience number?

A buyer should verify the metric label, population and time window, exposure-zone method, display and ad delivery evidence, dwell and viewability treatment, models, validation, data gaps, privacy, and deduplication. The number should stop at the highest label those conditions support.
