Overview

This series follows Obscura, a Rust-owned headless browser engine, from navigation through an executable DOM, readiness, rendering, interfaces, and operational boundaries. Its central thesis is that browser automation is a stateful system: network policy, V8, DOM mutations, lifecycle signals, caller state, and optional geometry or paint must stay connected. Obscura offers composable control through CLI, CDP, MCP, and Rust APIs, with bounded execution, network gates, and capture limits. The trade-off is an evolving compatibility surface and in-process V8; adoption depends on testing the actual workload, while project-reported performance comparisons still need independent reproduction.

Learning outcomes
  • Obscura treats browser automation as coordinated page state, not a single HTML fetch.
  • Readiness and persistence are separate choices: a useful observation point does not define credential isolation.
  • Its optional renderer shares geometry with paint, while visual fidelity remains workload- and feature-dependent.
  • Obscura bounds common runtime and egress failures, but in-process V8 is not a hostile-page sandbox.

FAQ

What are Obscura’s main trade-offs?

Obscura trades Chromium’s broad compatibility surface for more explicit, composable control over page state, policy, interfaces, and feature profiles. The fit depends on the workload, and compatibility and performance claims still require testing.

How does Obscura decide when a dynamic page is ready?

Obscura lets callers choose lifecycle milestones, adaptive settling, fixed waits, or application-specific signals. None proves that the page has no possible future work.

Which Obscura interface should a workload use?

Use the CLI for bounded jobs, CDP for existing Puppeteer or Playwright sessions, MCP for stateful agents, and Rust embedding for page-scoped callbacks and intervention.

Is Obscura a complete sandbox for untrusted pages?

No. Obscura bounds several runtime, network, queue, response, and capture failures, but in-process V8 is not a complete hostile-page sandbox; adversarial deployments still need OS isolation and restricted networking.
