Overview

This series follows a NextChat message from locally selected context through provider-specific translation, web or desktop transport, streamed return, persistence, synchronization, and optional tools, artifacts, and realtime media. Its central lesson is conditional: local-first storage does not prevent provider processing, and a unified interface does not unify semantics, security, or reliability. The boundary map helps users choose deployments and capabilities by identifying who controls each state, credential, request, and external effect—and where the open-source evidence stops.

Learning outcomes
  • NextChat keeps working conversation state client-side by default, but selected context still reaches a model provider.
  • Provider adapters preserve a shared interface while changing roles, media, tools, and settings by provider and model.
  • Layered memory bounds requests, but summaries are lossy and may be unsuitable when exact wording matters.
  • Streaming reliability depends on the provider, route or native bridge, parser, and client; a complete HTTP status is not enough.
  • Export, synchronization, and capabilities create distinct trust boundaries; the inspected code does not establish universal encryption, approval, or retention guarantees.

FAQ

Is NextChat local or remote?

NextChat is local-first for working state but remote for model processing: the client stores session data and sends selected context to the configured provider. Export, synchronization, tools, artifacts, and realtime can add further destinations.

How does NextChat support multiple model providers?

NextChat uses a shared chat interface with provider-specific adapters that translate roles, images, tools, safety settings, and parameters. Switching models can therefore change behavior rather than simply change the backend.

Does NextChat remember an entire conversation?

No. NextChat selects a bounded recent window and may add a generated summary; clearing context excludes older messages and earlier memory from future requests. Summaries preserve continuity approximately, not exact recall.

Why can a NextChat stream arrive late or fail?

A late or failed reply can originate at the client, adapter, route, proxy, credentials, model policy, endpoint, native bridge, parser, or provider. The useful diagnosis is to locate the last transition that behaved correctly.

What should users check before trusting a NextChat deployment?

Users should map where sessions, credentials, selected prompts, backups, tools, artifacts, and media go, then inspect route, logging, access, and capability controls. The open-source path does not by itself prove encryption, per-action approval, provider-retention limits, or resumable delivery.
