Overview
This series explains how Dify turns model calls into governed application runs. It follows the path from workflow control and tenant-bound model capabilities through data preparation and retrieval, explicit tools, bounded Agents, state, human approval, event streams, and operational feedback. Its thesis is that composable, observable boundaries make model-driven behavior more adaptable and diagnosable without making models truthful, sources authoritative, side effects reversible, or deployments secure. Repository evidence supports implemented mechanisms and integration seams, not universal claims about quality, cost, reliability, performance, or security.
Learning outcomes
- Dify separates workflow control, capability access, context, actions, state, and feedback to make model-driven applications more inspectable.
- Explicit workflows suit stable decisions and consequential side effects; bounded Agents suit variability, but both need server-side constraints.
- RAG quality depends on extraction, chunking, indexing, filtering, ranking, and reconstruction—not generation alone.
- Repository evidence supports mechanisms and interfaces, not universal claims about answer quality, cost, reliability, performance, or security.

PlansFAQ
What does Dify add beyond a direct model call?
Dify adds an application control plane around the model: workflows, context handling, tools, state, event streams, persistence, and traces. It makes decisions and failures more inspectable without making generation deterministic.
How does Dify make model providers replaceable?
Dify resolves provider, model, credentials, schema, quota, and transport at runtime through tenant-bound managers and plugin adapters, so workflow logic need not hard-code a vendor. Compatibility and provider behavior still require testing.
Why does Dify RAG not guarantee a correct answer?
Dify RAG does not guarantee correctness because answer quality depends on extraction, chunking, indexing, filtering, ranking, source reconstruction, and model interpretation. Provenance makes the path inspectable, not the source authoritative.
What happens when a Dify Agent needs human approval?
Dify ends the inner Agent run and pauses the outer workflow while the product layer authorizes and records a form. A later Agent run resumes the prior session; this does not undo side effects that happened before the pause.
